"The Day I Fell into Friendship"

'Twas not long ago, a month or so, when I first met my friend Bob
I was walking in the backyard field, fighting clouds of morning fog
It was very hard to see that dawn as I began to take a stroll
Before I could even scream for help, I landed in a hole
I struggled for my balance yet I landed in a heap
I found myself trapped underground, very cold and very deep
As I searched 'round for an exit, I saw an approaching distant light
A wave of fear came over me - was I gonna be alright?
When the light at last had reached me, I could clearly see its source
Not a monster or a gobblin, but a groundhog...of course!
He grunted kindly, softly, in his primitive sort of way
As he brought me a blanket, poured a drink, I was so at ease that day
I stayed below for hours, Bob as curious as I
I learned to grunt, he learned to speak, but then we bid good-bye
I usually see Bob daily, around 7:00 he eats
I call to him, he looks at me, smiles, then retreats
I never had imagined that I'd meet a friend like he
One to share my hopes and dreams, whatever they might be
I implore you, please, drive carefully, & put gunfire to an end
Because the life that you might take could be a close, dear friend.

"A Poem For Rodger"

Rodger, Rodger
Where are you?
The trees are bare and winter has arrived
I am blue

Every day I look out the window
Expecting you there
But you're in a burrow somewhere
Asleep without a care

All summer long you lounged in the yard
Laying under the big pine tree
Foraging around in the grass
And coming up the back steps to see me

I got accustomed to your antics
Leaving footprints that told a story
Scaring my parrot through the picture window
Peeing on the back stairs to mark your territory

In August your face was bare
With mouse-like ears hanging down
By September you were fuzzy again
With a nice new coat of brown

Then the inevitable happened
I saw you one last time in the snow
Mother Nature told you
To sleep you had to go

So Rodger, wherever you are
I hope you're safe, come snow, ice or rain
I can't wait until February
To see you again
