A non-profit organization dedicated to the praise and exaltation of groundhogs everywhere, who have long been ignored as a higher species of rodentia.

All praise the humble groundhog! Groundhogs, who have long suffered in martyred silence the injustice of being overlooked, as well as overshadowed by lesser animals such as rabbits and chipmunks! But for those of you who would exclaim in protest: "The Groundhog has its own nationally recognized holiday - Groundhog Day!" Forgive me for my blunt cruelty - but your ignorance is loathsome and offensive to all self-respecting Groundhog-lovers everywhere. (Such as the founders of this marvelous organization.) This holiday is a classic example of groundhog oppression - what appears to be an honor is actually an excuse for mankind to utilize this animals remarkable talents without giving it proper credit for its services. This so-called holiday is actually a form of slavery, forced upon the Groundhog without its expressed written consent. You will realize (if you reflect and meditate on this very important subject) that on Groundhog Day if the blessed animal sees its shadow (and if it does, it is usually because some wretched, overweight, pampered, Groundhog-despising official is blocking its sun) then it is inexplicably despised, and is sometime hated for many weeks after the ceremony. If the Groundhog does not see his or her shadow, then it is given a flicker of recognition and forgotten until the next year. This lack of appreciation and attention, my dear countrymen, must be stopped!
Even at times when it seemed the humble yet glorious creature would receive its due like the time a movie-Groundhog Day-included its name in the title. The movie was, however, not about our beloved creature, but was instead about the many attempts of Bill Murray to sleep with Andie MacDowell. The injustice of such occurences must be stopped - something this organization is determined to do.

A little about our grand organization. SOGG's objectives are:

1. To raise the public opinion of the Groundhog (Marmota monax) through public education programs, from the elementary level to large-print editions for nursing homes. All materials are provided free of charge. We are a non-profit group.
2. To ensure that all Groundhogs used in the infamous Groundhog Day festivities are not only protected from harm, but fed a tasty, low-fat feast of whatever the Groundhog desires. Also, more national attention shall be focused on February 2nd, and Groundhogs WILL be given all due recognition for their vital part in Americana folklore and weather prediction. (A different song composed annually for the occaision would also be appropriate.)
3. To make sure that Groundhogs enjoy a peaceful, prosperous, and productive life free from exploitation and fear wheresoever they choose to live.

SOGG has recently received a stamp of approval Punxsutawney Phil, from the the king of groundhogs! In a message sent to the organizers of SOGG, Phil stated, "I want the SOGG to go forward with its good works and that GROUNDHOG DAY will be given all due recognition for their vital part in American folklore and weather prediction. Go go forward into good works!!! I would like all my cousins to enjoy a peaceful, prosperous and productive life free and happy, having kids and eating good."
